A quickie before hitting the shower and heading to Mass.

We survived Junior's last birthday party of the year. Guests started to arrive around 1:00 and the last left around 10:00 last night. I figured the child would sleep late--what was I thinking? He was up by 6:00 looking for me to put his new basketball hoop on the back of his bedroom door.

My SIL made up the goody bags. This years theme--Pirates. Last night Junior was running around with a napkin do-rag, eye patch, a sand pail for a peg leg and one of those telescoping thingies while singing "Yo, Ho, Ho and a Bottle of Rum..." I'm hoping someone will email us a picture (our camera's not working) or we will try to recreate it when the darned camera is working again.

I'm a little afraid to go downstairs. The house is a disaster. Why did I spend so much time cleaning before everyone came when after requires even more clean-up??

As I said before I start the new job tomorrow, what I didn't tell everyone I had to buy a new computer for it. The system we bought back in April has Windows Vista, I need XP for the job. After a little research I found out I couldn't load XP because Vista wouldn't find the drivers required? I had to special order a system with XP because all the "stores" in the area are only selling new systems with Vista. It came Thursday I hooked it up Friday. The geeky BILs supplied a monitor and a router which will be installed today and soon my already way too crowded home office will be even more crowded. The office is my catch all room (aka junk room). What a mess.

I can't decide which I should do first the office or the rest of the house.

ETA--cleaning up the house wasn't that bad, just some straightening. So, it's on to the home office.

Kinderkamp (our schools version of Vacation Bible School) and Bingo are on today's agenda.

My parents are picking the child up after camp and taking him to lunch and a matinee of Ratatouille. It's a surprise.

Yesterday the mom running the camp program announced "He's so funny." I can only hope the child behaves.

Cool, Jenster thinks I "rock".

I'm not so sure, but I'll gladly pass on the title to 5 Rockin' bloggers tomorrow :)

Have a great day and happy reading.

A day in the life...

Life with an active five year old is always interesting. Yesterday was one of those days that was a little more interesting.

We left the house early for some errands (this means before my morning shower). I warned the child before breakfast "Eat your breakfast, because I'm not buying anything while we're out." "Okay." Right, half an hour later "I'm hungry. Let's go to Sub-way." He's never set foot in a Sub-way, but it's next door and he figures it's close and I'll cave. I'm proud to say I didn't.

We get home, he has a yogurt and goes out to play. I tell him he's got half an hour outside before he has to come in. I need to take a shower and he needs to be inside. Okay, 45 minutes later he's inside with the his 2nd best friend from down the street. Instead of trying to figure out how to get rid of the 2nd BF I tell them to go out on the back porch and watch some TV while I take a quick shower. I get my clothing out, turn on the water and hear the front door open, both went outside to play. I turn the water off and head downstairs. Finally, I manage to get the 2nd BF on his way home and the 5 year old into the house with a "We're going shopping, but "Junior" can come out and play later."

I'm back upstairs and he yells up the stairs he's hungry. I tell him to have some cheese and fruit. "Okay."

Finally, I get into the shower. I'm out dried off and getting dressed and I hear water running, and I hear water running and I hear water running. And that gets me downstairs quickly. He's washing the dishes. So, I take his "clean" dishes off the drain board, put them back in the sink and instead of chasing him away I give him is first lesson in washing dishes. The first thing we wash is a pink depression glass plate. "Why is this in the sink?" "I used your good crystal for my lunch." That's what he calls anything that isn't china from my china cabinet. He also used a crystal sherbet cup for a glass.

Before we leave I give him a Go-Tart to help fill the bottomless pit he calls a stomach.

As we're pulling up to Barnes & Noble I tell him he's not getting anything but a book inside and to stay close to me. Apparently he heard nothing I said as he announces he's hungry and can't wait for a snack inside. As if I'm buying a 5 year old a Starbucks "snack". I then make the threat "... if you don't behave I'll drag you out by your hair." Not my best threat but it's what popped out of my mouth. "The hair is better then my leg, that would really hurt." Okay. I'm looking for the new Linda Howard which I thought was out but I was wrong. But I did pick up NR's new High Noon and bribed the child with a shark book to keep him out of children's section and away from the Thomas the Tank engine train table. While we were waiting on line he announced that "You wouldn't really drag me out by my hair, that would hurt me and you wouldn't want to hurt me." Thank God there was no one on line with us.

So we head across the street to Adams. Adams is a family owned market, smaller than a supermarket, but much bigger than a farm stand. It has the best quality produce, cheaper than any supermarket and they sell a tremendous amount of locally grown food. They also have a great butcher shop and really good gourmet cheeses, and the best deli counter in the county. Can you tell it's one of my favorite stores? Junior loves this store because it has kid size carts and he gets to wheel it around. Of course when he starts neighing like a horse and making it buck I'm not real happy, when he starts doing wheely spins by the deli counter I'm really not happy. He's still hungry. I finally cave and tell him he can get a giant cookie on the way out. No, he wants an ice cream. Okay, an ice cream. He wants a fudge bar. "I don't think you like them." "Yeah, I do." Half way home he hands the melting mess to me, "I don't like it."

We're home and the 2nd BF is back. They want to go swimming. I talk them out of it because it's kind of cold (75 degrees) for swimming. Well, that only lasted about 20 minutes. "We're hot from riding our bikes, can we go in the pool." Now I argue that the friend doesn't have permission and off they go to get permission. So, I've got 2 kids in the pool having a great time but they're out in less than half an hour "it's too cold."

While the kids were in the pool, the hubby called. He's had a rotten day, the boss is on the war path and he'd like a quiet night. "Pull "Junior" aside and tell him no one for dinner." Got it.

Well, it was too late, the 2nd BF had already been invited for dinner and got the okay when he went home for his bathing suit.

We had pizza delivered.

While we were waiting for the pizza. Junior comes in and announces he traded for the 2nd BF bike. What? Yeah he got the bike and the friends "toddler" helmet and he gave the 2nd BF his good helmet and his Razor Scooter. This needs fixing, we head down the street and get this straightened out and the 2nd BF came back for pizza.

The boys went back out to ride bikes and at 7:30 the child was back in the house for the night. Hit the shower and was in bed by 8:10.

Ah, peace and quiet, the child's in bed, the hubby's asleep early and I'm reading the new Nora Roberts, that is until 10:00 when the child comes in and says he can't sleep. "You haven't been to sleep yet?" "Nope, I watched The Naked Brother's Band movie on Nick--it was great." Maybe we need to take the TV out of his room. He crawled in with us and was asleep in about 30 seconds.

A day in the life...

"I just love your little boy"

"I just love your little boy." I hear this a lot. I'm not sure what catches peoples attention, but for some strange reason no matter where we go someone stops to tell me how cute or beautiful he is or how wonderful his smile or eyes are.

The other day I'm sitting in a meeting at school, there are 2 reps from the archdiocese and one of the "Alumni" Mom's says "I just love your little boy. He's so good in church. He was such a handful he was when he was little."

Oh, God, I know what's next.

"I remember the day he escaped the pew and made it all the way to the alter."

Me too.

Brings a tear to my eye...

My adorable child made me a Mother's Day card. I wish I had a scanner to post the cover. It's a picture of him with his heart on top of his head. When I asked why there was a heart on his head he told me... "That's my heart coming out of my body to give to you because I love you so much." He's good, isn't he?--LOL

On the back he wrote...

"Be Happy It is your 'specialest' day."

He came into me three times and asked me how to spell "specialest". I tried to tell him it wasn't a word, but he insisted.

Love that kid. :)

Child and School Mode

It's going to be a Mommy week. Yesterday was the class Easter Party in the morning (we hid 150 Easter Eggs in the class before the kids even arrived --10 per child and then we couldn't find them all :) ) and spent yesterday afternoon collecting more info for the school's new website. I spend this morning with the school's librarian picking out graphics for the site. Tomorrow it's coloring eggs after school at the BF's house and T-Ball practice. Vacation starts Thursday--we're having lunch with Grandma and Grandpa, and Saturday is the Little League Parade and his first official T-Ball game.

But evenings are mine and I'm going to make a good dent in that TBR pile. Right now I'm reading the new Jane Feather.

Have a good one and happy reading.

T-Ball and Palm Sunday

T-Ball has officially taken over our lives. Thursday's practice was at 5:30, we didn't get home until after 7:00. Friday there were team and individual pictures at the Firehouse (organized chaos). Saturday another practice. And for some reason the practices and games during the week all seem to be on days my husband works late. I get to be the taxi driver. Not that I really mind, I don't plan to be anti-social, but it does turn into an hour+ of reading time.

Yesterday both of us took him to practice, I'm rather relieved my husband isn't going to be one of those crazy sports Dads. We got home early enough to go to Saturday afternoon Mass. My husband's knees were bothering him, so he decided to stay home.

Palm Sunday Mass turned into Mommy torture. The child that's an angel at Mass when in school, who behaves when his father's there turned into demon child. Wouldn't sit still, used the palms as a sword, kept poking the people in front of use, sat on the kneeler and the floor, and then started talking and playing with the kid behind us. It didn't matter how many times I threatened he wouldn't remotely listen. By the time Mass was over all I wanted to do was grab him by the hair and drag him home. Very Christian of me isn't it?--LOL. TV privileges are gone, and if he misbehaves this badly ever again I've promised to bring him to Mass everyday until he decides he can listen and sit remotely still.

More Books

We were up all night with a sick child. Stomach bug hit about 10:30 and kept going until about 4:30--poor baby. But it gave me a fairly quiet day at home today. He's great when he's sick, sleeps and watches Noggin--loves The Upside Down Show. No babysitting the best friend, a little blog hopping, though I mostly lurked and guess what I found another B&N bag full of books for the TBR pile:
  • The Smoke Thief -- Shanna Abe (Fantasy?? romance) I've heard you either love it or hate it, we'll see :)
  • Hero Worship -- Dawn Calvert (Historical?) I liked the synopsis in RT
  • A Respectable Trade -- Philipa Gregory (Historical Fiction)
  • The Marcelli Princess -- Susan Mallery (Contemporary)
  • Count to Ten -- Karen Rose (Romantic Suspense)
  • Summer by the Sea -- Susan Wiggs (Contemporary)
  • The Winter Lodge -- Susan Wiggs (Contemporary)

And an ARC arrived in yesterday's mail that may trump everything on the TBR pile, Michelle Moran's Nefertiti: A Novel (Historical Fiction), but I want to schedule uninterrupted time for it.

I finished Laura Lee Guhrke's And Then He Kissed Me and wasn't planning on writing a review but think I might.

Have a good night and happy reading.

Those odds and ends again

I've got a column up on RTB today.

I'm about 1/3 the way through Demon Moon all I can say is AMAZING :D My booklight's batteries were dying last night so I got up and started reading at the computer for a couple of hours. I've noticed for some reason I read slower when at the computer and the handheld. I wonder why because I'm not really skimmer.

Ran into the UBS yesterday to pickup Erica Orloff's The Roofer, she was able to get it from another UBS. It's a hard one to track down and comes highly recommended by both Wendy and Jane. Everytime I'm in the store the owner tries to talk me into buying her business, she's ready to retire. I wouldn't mind owning a bookstore, but I know for a fact this one just breaks even and is little more than an expensive hobby. Maybe I could do more with it and maybe I couldn't but I'm certainly not real interested in taking on a "hobby" with expenses that start with $1000 month rent and goes up from there. Though I do think she could be doing much more if she had a web site. She has someone interested but they'll move the inventory about an hour away to another UBS. I'd hate to see that happen.

Junior's best friend will be spending afternoons with us this week. His mom is out of town because of a death in her family, the situation is complicated and I wont go into the details. What makes kids think they can do things at other peoples houses that they would never be allowed to at home? The child squeezed the contents of a juice box all over my dining room table. "Would you do that at home?" "No" "Then don't do it at my house." I'm not real subtle--LOL. And it's too cold to send them out to play. It's going to be a long week.

Rambling

Last night our school had a financial meeting, it seems the powers that be in the Parent Guild want us to have all our ducks in a row before our new pastor arrives in July. I volunteered for 2 committees. I know what am I thinking?? LOL

On the way to the meeting I stopped at the library and picked up Innocent in Death, it turns out I was first in the queue :D I've only got it for a week, so it moved up to the top of my TBR pile. I've got about 100 pages left, I'll probably have it finished before I go to bed.

It was one of those weird days, we had a 2 hour delay for school this morning because of ice, but since it's "First Friday" he only had half a day. Dropped the child off at 10:25 and picked him up at Noon. First Friday also means he can have a Happy Meal or BK Kids Meal for lunch. I spent time on-line research for one of the new committees, and putting the finishing touches on my next RTB column. And spent a large chunk of the afternoon reading while Junior watched The Polar Express for the 1000th time. Made fish tacos and rice for dinner--no meat on Fridays, to be honest I can live without fish tacos and I don't eat rice.

I'm just rambling. Have a good one and happy reading.

All The News Fit To Print

It's snowing, not very hard, but enough to keep the schools closed in our area. Well, I don't think hard enough to keep the schools closed but no one consults me. I remember my parents taking the glass out of the storm door so we could climb out and go to school, the snow was so deep they couldn't swing the door out--snow days were few and far between--I guess that was the olden days :)

It's probably just as well, Junior woke with a fever and is complaining of a stomach ache, a little toast, a little Motrin and so far so good.

The hubby, good man that he is dug us out, and the neighbors on either side--Mrs. B is in her 70's and had a knee replacement about 6 months ago, on the other side is Miss B and she lives alone. Both would love to pay a neighborhood kid to dig them out but the kids don't seem all that interested in making money.

I finally finished a couple of books--one romance, okay/good--one women's fiction/chick lit, very good. I'm finding myself somewhat disenchanted with romance. I'm thinking I need a major break from romance. In the last couple of months I have more INYIM DNFs than books finished. There can't possibly be a problem with that many books and the last two books I really liked weren't romances.

The Romance: Date Me, Baby, One More Time by Stephanie Rowe. To be honest, I wasn't all that impressed. Fun story, but rather innocuous. Katie MacAlister called it "A hilarious underworld romp." I don't know how hilarious I'd consider it. Kind of cute though. I vacillated between giving it a B- and a C+.

The Women's Fiction/Chick Lit: Good Things by Mia King (click on the title for a link to B&N and a blurb). Debut novel I discovered on the "New Release" table at B&N the last time I was in. The cover caught my eye and I liked the blurb and I still have gift cards burning a hole in my pocket so I figured what the heck, not what I'd normally pick up but worth a try--I'm glad I did. This one I liked a lot. A nice story about a 40 year old woman finding herself again when life throws her a curve, and she even finds love, but the romance isn't the thrust of the story. After having a pity party she basically decides when life gives you a lemon make "Peace of Mind Tea", you thought I was going to say lemonade, but Peace of Mind Tea is one of a bunch of interesting recipes included in the back of the book.

Junior has just announced he's feeling much better and wants to go out and play in the snow--it's going to be an interesting day.

Have a good one and happy reading.

Odds and ends and other things...

You can always tell when I'm either on a reading binge or I've dried up for a few days, I don't have much to say about books. I read 6 books in the first 7 days of the month and haven't finished anything since Wednesday, okay I haven't started anything either. :D

Yesterday morning I had a meeting with Junior's music teacher. The school is already planning the Kindergarten Graduation. It turns out Junior is going to be Noah, the only child in the class that will need a costume, the rest of the kids will be various animals and will use hand held masks. I've been given an official script. The whole thing is just too cute. The Best Friend volunteered his mom to make the masks--30 masks. I promised to help.

This morning as I was working on an article about world building for Speculative Romance Online I get a phone call. The Best Friend's mom called "You want to go to the bookstore?" Like that's a silly question, of course. Going to the bookstore usually means B&N, but she wanted to go to Borders instead.

The two of us wander around the store for 2 hours and don't buy a thing. She's trying to talk me into reading Christine Feehan's Game series. I've told her the Dark series has scarred me for life, but she swears this one is much better--I don't know, is it possible?

I found something curious, why is it that romance accounts for 50% of the mass market paperback sold but only has 2 stinking aisles, but sf/fantasy has 4 aisles and mystery/thrillers has 3 1/2?

While I was wandering through their romance section I kept having to walk around this old man. Which I thought was kind of cool, an older man reading romance until I realize he's in the trade paperback section of romance and he's only picking up erotic romances and when I peek over his shoulder and I'm pretty sure he's reading the dirty parts--LOL.

Another older man struck up a conversation with me by pointing out Deidre Martin's new book Chasing Stanley and I tell him it's about hockey and he should give it a try--didn't tell him it was a romance. I wonder if he bought it.

The hubby came home from work the the stomach virus. He's looking for sympathy and company, so I'll be signing off for tonight.

Have a good one and happy reading.
