Reading = Escape

We didn't do anything exciting this weekend. No family barbecues, no going away, no train rides, just us and the news coverage of Katrina.

I used reading as an escape this weekend. Between Friday and Monday nights, I finished 4 books and started a 5th.
  1. Houston, We Have A Problem by Erin McCarthy, a fun sexy book. Sexy being the driving force of the book, but it had a good story line and it moved along well.
  2. A Lady's Guide to Rakes by Kathryn Caskie, another regency historical in a long line of regency historicals, a good book, not great and not bad, just good.
  3. Simply Irresistible by Rachel Gibson, secret baby story, but it was good, but I love stories with a back drop of sports, and I love hockey.
  4. See Jane Score by Rachel Gibson, another hockey story, so I liked this one too.
  5. A Taste of Crimson by Marjorie M. Liu, I'm about half way through this book. It's great, better than the first in the series (Crimson City by Liz Maverick) and much better than Liu's first book Tiger Eye.

I'm really enjoying A Taste of Crimson. The world building is pretty much finished in the first book, but we get to see more of the werewolf world below ground. Crimson City had a vampire heroine and a human hero. This one has a great twist a werewolf heroine and a vampire hero, it's made more interesting by the class distinctions and hatred between the two societies.

Got to go lots to do today.

Have a great day and happy reading.

Wow, I can't believe how fast you read! Looks like we agree on HWHAP and SJS. Just finished Crimson City and I wasn't that impressed, but A Taste of Crimson sounds better so it's on my TBB.

Great! Now I have to buy the rest of Marjorie M Liu's books. I have the first but haven't read it.

I'm fascinated by a werewolf/vampire romance. Dang, are these romance?

Renee--A Taste of Crimson really is worth reading. I don't normally watch much TV, so I read at night and on the weekend I get more time to read because my husband is home and he wants and does spend more time with our son.

Cindy--Yes, these are romances. I think the quality of the writing between Marjorie M. Liu's first book is remarkable, this one is very good.

Anne--I had to pull myself away from the TV, I found myself crying most days and couldn't concentrate, reading helped refocus me.

I liked Liu's first book, but I do rank A Taste of Crimson higher, as well. She handles class so well in it -- and, I don't know, but I think I find the underbelly of the society more interesting than the privileged vampire society of the first book.

That, and the romance works so much better for me than in Crimson City.

Meljean, I completely agree with you. The "underbelly" (which is a great description by the way) is much more interesting, maybe because the characters seemed better developed. There was so much story and world building in Crimson City, that the characters and "romanced" seemed completely lost.

I just loved See Jane Score. Gibson is an up or down author but she is really 'up' with this one

I've been reading Minette Walters and scaring myself silly. She's such an amazing writer.
