That was kind of strange--contains spoilers...

On one of my recent UBS stops I picked up Pamela Rochford's Dangerous Consequences, an "Erotic Romance", that's a quote off the front cover. I've been reading Black Lace books for years and have always considered them more erotica than erotic romance. After reading 2 of them in the last week, I'm positive they're erotica that just happen to have HEA. All of which is okay, but kind of muddies the is it erotica or erotic romance waters. There's a good review over on Paperback Reader. And, they also point this out.

Now here is the strange part...

Jude Devereaux, the romance writer, is a secondary character.

Not so unusual, we see real people in romances all the time, but I don't expect the last sex scene in a book to be between the two main characters and a famous romance writer. For some strange reason, this felt like way too much information about someone I used to read faithfully. I've now got pictures in my head that just shouldn't be there--LOL. And then I made the mistake of clicking over from Paperback Reader to the author's website and now I've got an even stranger picture that really needs to go away.

That's -- weird. I don't know that I'd ever want a real (living) person to show up in a book. Too much like real-person fanfic, which is just way too creepy.

But dead people? Aw, yeah.

the hell? I heard JD is a real nice woman in person (NOT!). I wonder if she was the villian.

Meljean, it wasn't too creepy until I hit the sex scene, big ick factor.

Jane, honest, I finished the book. Definitely an erotica and not a romance, and no she's the heroines "good" friend, by the end of the book, it was way "too good" and way too much information. I think I'm scarred.

what?

eeeeeewwwwwwwwwwww

I am with meljean that just smacks of RPF and eeeewwwwwwwwwww. Who is this author and under what name does she have fic on the internet. Cuz really I have a hard time seeing anyone doing this who hasn't been warped by too much fanfic.

not that I think fanfic is bad mind you, just real people fic! eeeeewwwwwwwwww

Ewwww. Ewwwww. Ewwwww.

Because, like, ew.

Yuckers.

Even though I'm still annoyed that every one of her books has to have a descendant of either the Montgomeries or the Taggarts, I don't think she deserves to be written into a sex-scene.

Must wash eyes with bleach.

Creepy - you bet!

Weird - uh huh!

JD writing under a pen name? Maybe?

I know at that point I would be thrown out of the book. Hey, you're in this nice little world and BLAM! they drop a real person into the action. Way to wreck my fantasy. Blergh

But dead people? Aw, yeah.

I don't know, a menage with Shakespeare in it still might manage to creep me out . . .

That is just bizarre, though, and I have to wonder how it actually got past editing because I'd sure be leary of publishing something like that.

Dead people don't bug me so much. Maybe this is because I have a raging crush on Gregory Peck.

But it's weird to write sex with a real person involved, especially if the real person isn't involved in any sort of fantasy industry. (Writing about sex with Brad Pitt would be mildly creepy... sex with JD? Come on, she's got living family members who have to deal with that squick factor and they're just not prepared for it.)(

Sybil, believe it or not, I've not read any fanfic. I wouldn't even know where to find it.

Suisan, I agree--completely sick of those two families, though for some reason, I liked The Mulberry Tree from a couple of years ago, but that's the only book of hers I've read in years.

Cindy, JD writing under a pen name? I don't think so as there's a picture of the woman on her website, and it's not JD. Of course I guess it could be faked, but I don't think so.

The author refers to the books she writes for Black Lace as "raunchy".

Bev, I have no problem with dead people, lots of historicals are filled with dead people. Catherine Coulter wrote a Silhouette years ago that featured an author marrying a doctor, which I always wondered about as she's married to a doctor and she makes references to writing Firesong either in that book or it's sequel.

Kate, I love Gregory Peck, Atticus in To Kill a Mockingbird is the perfect man.

Ladies, thanks for agreeing with me about the yuck factor.

really? hmmm ever watch x-files cuz I have rec's and links *g*

Oh, it's not that they're dead already that would bother me but what we're talking about having them involved in. Major mental block on that.

Unless of course it would be a logical choice for the individual, although I'm drawing a blank on who that would apply to . . .

Another thing I meant to say in that last post was that I've run across many "real life" characters in books that worked for me, but they were "in character" at least as far as common perceptions are concerned. So, it's more the choice of how the character is used that is suspect here. Why make that choice in the first place?

Wendy aka Portia here again...

Pamela Rochford is a friend of mine, and the character of Jude Devereux is a purely fictional character, because when she wrote the book, Pamela had never heard of the real Jude Devereux and just made the name up. :)

I think she put an erotic novelist in her book as an in joke for me...

Hope that clears up the confusion.

Love
